Pre-conception and Fertility Issues
Because the most important developments in the womb take place in the first few months, when planning a pregnancy you may consider using complementary therapies, nutrition, exercise and a healthy lifestyle to place the body in the optimum state for conception and early foetal development. The usual recommendation is to begin preparing about four months before attempting conception. This gives the body a chance to clear of toxins and benefit from healthier living.
Since the potential father will also be playing a key role in the process, he may make an effort to contribute healthy sperm by ensuring that all his body systems are functioning optimally. Treatments, good nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes may similarly be of benefit.
Fertility Issues
In about a third of investigated cases of subfertility, the problem is with the woman. Common factors include age, hormonal disorders, adhesions, blocked fallopian tubes, being overweight and pelvic infections. In another third, the problem is with the man (structural disorders, hormonal problems or infections). In the remaining third, the problem is with both partners or the situation is unexplained.
My therapies may help to stimulate the body’s innate healing powers so the body can redress not only detected, but also any undetected imbalances. They may play a highly beneficial role with cases of male and female subfertility, even alongside conventional medicine, including Assisted Repro- duction Techniques (ART) such as IVF or in conjunction with other complementary therapies. By working to balance all body systems, the potential mother and father are more likely to produce viable eggs and sperm and ultimately a healthy foetus.
A special word about stress: this may be a major factor in many instances of reduced fertility. Reflexology, Polarity Therapy and Sound Therapy aim to promote a deep state of relaxation, allowing the body to recover from persistent stressors that may be affecting the ability to conceive. If unresolved emotional issues are also a feature, being holistic, these therapies may provide a mechanism for release of emotions that are affecting a couple's fertility.
Teaching Experience
As a Reflexology Tutor, I was responsible for designing and running the Fertility Reflexology course at a private college in Surrey before moving back to Edinburgh.
